Remembering Luis

I remember hearing the Saint Barth talking about the difference in the cleanup between their island and the Friendly Island.

Across the way, the residents sat on lawnchairs and waited for the goverment cleanup crews to arrive, while on the smaller rock, everyone pitched in immedately to remove debris and sweep the streets. Partly apocryphal I'm sure, but probably directionally correct.
We went to SBH about 3-4 weeks after Luis, going through SXM. All around Juliana there were sailboats lying on their sides in the middle of the road, debris everywhere..... When we got to SBH and picked up our car, as we drove around La Tourmente we could see some folks putting the last touches on some repair stone work at the side of the road and, though there were still some signs of the hurricane, pretty much everything was back to normal.

A year later we returned, again through SXM, and found it hard to believe that some of the sailboats (although no longer in the middle of the road) were still lying on their sides on the east side near the airport.

The sense of community on SBH has always been one of its strong points for us!

I guess this is the best thread to post an update on the current hurricane pummeling Jamaica …. Can anyone report local conditions??

We arrive Nov 2 to island and can’t stop looking at the weather updates….

Thank you very much and we hope for the best…

Scott

Nothing brewing here except enough rain to keep the gardens and cisterns happy. Having seen the damage to this island after Luis in 1995 and Irma in 2017, I can only image the horrific impact of Melissa on Jamaica. 🙏

So true, Ellen . . . tragic — as residents & local governments don’t seem to be equipped & prepared, emotionally & otherwise, to deal with the devastation they’re facing.
